Will it hurt when I have my colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is usually well tolerated and rarely causes much pain. An intravenous will be started, so that the doctor may give you medication to make you feel relaxed and sleepy. You may feel bloating or cramping during the test from time to time because air is used to inflate the bowel.

Can I take my prescribed medications on the day of preparation and colonoscopy?

You should take all of your usual prescribed medications on the day of the preparation and colonoscopy, unless specifically instructed otherwise by Dr. Bookman or the Preparation Sheet Instructions. If unsure, please ask our office ahead of time.

If I have my period can I still have my colonoscopy?

Absolutely. Your period will in no way interfere with our ability to complete the colonoscopy.

After the colonoscopy will I know right away if I have cancer?

The majority of times Dr. Bookman will be able to inform you after the test if there is any cancer. Occasionally, Dr. Bookman may need to send samples for further testing before being able to say with certainty if you have a cancer.

Why is a colonoscopy important and what else can they find beside cancer?

There is a 1 in 20 lifetime risk for colon cancer. During a colonoscopy, polyps can be removed which prevents colon cancer. A colonoscopy is also helpful to diagnose other diseases of the bowel such as Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and infections.

If my stool samples are negative is it safe to say I don't have cancer?

Three negative stool samples means it is much less likely that you have colon cancer, but it is not definite. Stool tests do not test for colon polyps, which can subsequently turn into cancer. It is best to discuss the various screening options for colon cancer with your family physician or Dr. Bookman before deciding if you would like to proceed with a colonoscopy.

Can I drink clear fluids right up until my colonoscopy?

It is generally best to not have any fluids after midnight the night before your procedure. You may have sips of water with your medication. If you have diabetes, you may have a glass of apple juice if you feel light headed.

How safe is a colonoscopy?

While the colonoscopy is the most invasive test used to detect colon cancer or polyps, it is still considered quite safe. The most serious complication is causing a puncture of the wall of the bowel, which occurs 1 in 1000. Please see What are possible complications of a colonoscopy?

What can I eat after the colonoscopy?

It is advised to start off with fluids and a light meal until the bloating subsides completely, but you may eat whatever you like! Of course, we recommend a healthy meal in keeping with Canada’s Food Guide.

Can I go to the gym or do activities after my colonoscopy?

It is NOT recommended that you go to the gym, engage in sports or weight-bearing activities for the rest of the day.

How will I feel the day after the colonoscopy?

You should feel back to normal the day after your colonoscopy. You should be able to return to work, driving and all of your usual activities.

How soon will I get my results?

Dr. Bookman will tell you the results immediately after the procedure. If he sent samples to the lab for further testing, it generally takes up to two weeks for these results.
